Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh Music

August 14th, 2009

I was very fortunate to be able to sit in on rehearsals with the Britten-Pears Orchestra at Snape Maltings, near Aldeburgh today.  The rehearsals were for their performance on Sunday 16th, August 2009 (more info here) conducted by Vasily Petrenko, it was excellent. The main aim for me going was to learn more about “traditional” instrumentation and orchestration for a much larger project already under way and to come out very soon.

Luckily the day for me started with Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde prelude, one piece of music I have listened to and studied on my own (I have read entire books purely on that single piece of music) so it was serendipitous that I should start venturing into this world of sound with a piece I know and love.

Also during rehearsals were Shostakovich Symphony No.1, which I was unfamiliar to start with but enjoyed none the less, overall it was a great day and I am extremely grateful for being able to sit in on the rehearsals it certainly looks like it will be an excellent concert.

Project “Call and Response”

August 9th, 2009

happidrome2I will soon be heading down to a disused WW2 radar base on Goonhilly Downs, Cornwall, UK to do a weeks recordings of different sound environments and acoustic properties in September. The aim is to create several different sounds within a space, record them, compose pieces using the sounds with a view to distribute/transmit/broadcast those pieces of music from the space in the future.

The project will form a part of a much larger project already underway called HAPPIDROME.

“HAPPIDROME is an experimental artist-led project platform, located at a disused WW2 radar base on Goonhilly Downs, Cornwall, UK. Since 2007, artists Sara Bowler and Elizabeth Masterton have been working with the support of the land manager, Natural England, to devise and present new work by invited artists in the 50+ extant radar buildings (some of which are intact, others open to the elements), on the Downs and online.” More information here.

Updates on the project witll under Call and Response category on this blog.
