Amid all the chaos I thought the only thing I could do to help was to put together a complation of chip music help raise donations and awareness for the people of Japan in their difficult time. If it wasn’t for the hard working people of Japan there would be none of this great chip tune music in the first place.
The compilation is available now! In exchange we simply ask you to donate or do something positive for Japan. We will not be collecting any money ourselves, we are using First Giving to help collect money on behalf of the Red Cross to aid in the Tsunami relief campaign here.

We had one of our final foley recording sessions today, following on from that I took them through the basics of sound editing and showing them a few tricks I have learned over the years. Today we recorded a lot of vegtables, cabbages for alien pods opening, celery for bones snapping.
Listen to the “FoleyMedley” Mp3 below for some extacts of the nearly hundred sounds in all made and recording by the students on the video game design course at University Campus Suffolk. Mp3 include ship taking off, machine humming, door opening closing, footsteps, lasers and more.
I was asked to give a set of three lectures at Anglia Ruskin by a colleague Steven Harris who has managed to put together a very impressive video game design and programming course. The three lectures look at sound and music in video games and films, looking at several game trailers and clips from cartoons we were able to discuss some of the more common elements and assess the intended effect on the viewer.
Good fun was had by all and I can tell they are thinking about it as I am receiving emails about the talk already.
From time to time and when I have the time, I get to review games over at GamePeople.co.uk, and it’s great not only do I get to put my views across about new games but also read reviews by real people. I tend to review more family and younger childrens games, that way I can share them with my kids and where possible include them in our daily activities. I believe that video games are just as important as other ways of learning and communicating especially when used correctly.
I am the “Magnetic Gamer” making fun reviews on my fridge and you can read my lastest reviews of Starship Patrol, AiRace : Tunnel and Advanced Circuits on the DSi Ware.
There is also loads of info on the new Nintendo 3Ds here so go and check it out and join the debate.
Just a quick mention I am the sketchPatch featured artist of the month you can go and check outthe crazy things I have made and see the code behind it all.
You can also make and upload your own to show of your skills.
You can check it all out here on there amazing site here and be sure to follow them on Twitter here for updates here.
I am really pleased to announce I have been asked to write game reviews for gamepeople.co.uk!!! Although I am largely known for taking video game systems apart as the chip tune musician Pixelh8, this will be a more critical review than a physical dissection of the games, so I will be swapping the screwdriver for the game pad on this new adventure. Admittedly it has been a while since I have really had the opportunity to sit down and enjoy playing, so this for me is exciting as this marks a return for me to what started it all, the game. So come along and join me and my four kids as we make our way through the good and the bad and reveal stories of how games form an important part of our everyday life.
In statement from Number 10 Downing street, PM Gordon Brown aplogises for the “appalling” treatment of Alan Turing.
“Alan Turing, a mathematician most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes, was convicted of ‘gross indecency’ in 1952 and sentenced to chemical castration.”
This apology although coming a little late is still very very appreciated by those who support and admire Turing for his dedication to his work. You can read the full statement here.
Ada Lovelace was arguably the worlds first programmer, she theorised computers would be used for Mathematics/Science and Music before they were invented. Whislt working on “Obsolete?” I found this quite inspirational, because at The National Museum of Computers in Bletchley Park we have Scientists and Mathematicians and I was the one fortunate enough to bring the music to the equation.
I mention this idea in both of my video interviews for BBC here and ZDNet.co.uk.
Internationally renowned chip tune musician, teacher, designer and published author Pixelh8 / Matthew C. Applegate makes his music from reprogramming some of the oldest and rarest vintage computer systems in the world.
Parallel to his involvement in music performance, Pixelh8 encourages creative computing in schools and workshops across the United Kingdom and is a PhD research Degree student researching "Educational Music Technology".
